Handgun Qualification License (HQL) Class

Maryland State Police and NRA Approved Firearm Training for Handgun Qualification License (HQL)

Our firearm training course is approved by the Maryland State Police and NRA, fulfilling the requirements to apply for the Handgun Qualification License (HQL). The class includes approximately 5 hours of classroom instruction and live firing at a shooting range.

Course Content:

• State Firearm Law
• Home Firearm Safety
• Handgun Mechanism and Operation
• Handling Demonstrations

Live Firing Requirements: Each student must safely shoot 1-2 rounds from a handgun during the live firing portion at the range.

Certification: Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a Handgun Qualification License training certificate. This certificate is necessary for applying for the HQL with the Maryland State Police. Note that completion of this class does not guarantee the issuance of an HQL by the Maryland State Police.

Class Details:

• Length: Approximately 4-5 hours for Initial, 2-3 hours for Renewal
• Fee: $125 for Initial, $75 for Renewal
• Range Fee: Approximately $20

Student Requirements:

• Maryland issued driver’s license or government ID for the application process
• Arrival on time and attendance for the entire duration of the class
• Comfortable attire (no V-neck shirts, tank tops, or open-toe shoes)
• Water and snacks (optional)
• Own handgun (if using during live fire) in a carrying case, unloaded, and cleared by instructors
• Ammunition (minimum 5 rounds per person)
• Paper target for qualification (provided)
• Ear muffs or ear plugs (provided)
• Safety glasses (provided)
• Notepad and pen
• Laptop (optional)
• Signed Waiver Release Form
• Signed Student Info Form

Included:

• Ear protection and eye protection if needed
• Paper target for qualification
• Classroom instruction and training certificate upon successful completion
• Assistance with application process if required
• Photos: Passport-Size Colored photograph (if needed)

Not Included:

• Live Scan Fingerprints (required separately)
• Maryland State Police application fees ($50 for initial HQL, $20 for renewal)
• Ammunition (except 22LR caliber if using our guns)

Note: No ammunition is allowed in the classroom; it must be left in your vehicle. Safety protocols are strictly enforced throughout the course.
